Organic Structures from Spectra (L D Field, S Sternhell, J K Kalman) John
Wiley and Sons)
ISBN : 0-471-95631-7 is the 2nd edition of this very popular teaching text
and spectroscopy problem book. The book has been almost completely
re-written and modernised. It describes various spectroscopic techniques
commonly used for identification and characterisation of organic compounds
(1H and 13C NMR, Mass Spec., IR, UV) with a strong emphasis on the
interpretation of NMR spectra.

The main body of the book is a set of approximately 200 graded structural
problems with Mass Spec., IR, UV, 13C and 1H NMR spectra. Most problems
feature 1H NMR spectra obtained at higher fields (with expansions and
integrals) and 13C spectra with DEPT for assigning carbon multiplicities.
There are many more easy problems than in other collections and this permits
novices to gain confidence before being exposed to more difficult examples.

The problems have been carefully selected to develop and consolidate a
student's understanding of organic spectroscopy. The text covers theory
only in sufficient detail to understand the instrumentation and principles
required to tackle problem solving - the book is written with an emphasis on
teaching/learning by example. The book is targeted at undergraduate or
graduate courses designed to give students a working knowledge of organic
spectroscopy and prepare them to be future users.

A set of solutions to the problems can be obtained from the authors (bona
fide instructors only).
