Aspectstation 1 hard disk problem

I have been trying to resuscitate an old Aspectstation 1 with a faulty HP
C2247 hard disk. In my innocence I thought that a 'vanilla' SCSI 1Gb disk
ought to do the job, but this generates lots of SCSI errors ('Timed out
waiting for selection interrupt' etc.) when unix.r3030_std is run. Is
there something unusual about the SCSI requirements of the Aspectstation?
Most of the functions (sprobe, format etc.) seem to work fine with Seagate
etc. drives.
