interruption of long term acquisition

Bruker users,
We has a strange case of an acquisition to stop in the middle of
the experiment on our DRX500 spectrometer. It appears that it
continues pulsing, but it stops writing data to the ser and acqus file
(after about 20h of 30h total experiment time as judged from 1s TD
and the last update times of the files). Attempts to access the
acquisition window result in the error message "Remote connection
refused". The pulsing can not be stopped by typing "halt" or
"stop", but only by killing the command.
Has anybody observed this problem before ? We are running with
XWinNMR1.3 under Iris 5.3.
Thanks in advance

Holger
