just a curiosity

Our DRX-400 has been behaving extremely well lately and it's been a couple
of months since I have had to reboot it. I had been noticing lately that
calculations had slowed down quite a bit on the SGI O2. Yesterday there was
a communication problem between the computer and the spectrometer and I had
to do a complete power down and reboot. The first thing I noticed was that
the screen saver was moving much faster, and then that all other functions
of the computer had improved.

I have been told that, for this reason, it is a good idea to reboot UNIX
systems on a regular basis in order to prevent this type of performance
degradation. Just out of curiosity, what types of things might be causing
the computer to slow down, and aside form rebooting, are there other ways to
fix the problem?

Thanks.
