Summary and Thanks, X32 Graphics problem

Many thanks to all those who replied to my recent question concerning
flickering pixels in 2D mode on our AMX500 X32/3.

Quite a few others have seen this problem, and it seems to be temperature
related. When
ours first started it also seemed to be related to temperature (clean those
fan
filters!), but now even occurs when the system is stone cold. We also
replaced
some of the console back fans with higher capacity ones as well.

Bruker suggested running "endtest" and although the report did not
show any problems, the graphics displayed had the same problem - so it
is not something peculiar to UXNMR. They also suggested running the array
processor test, as the graphics and array processor are "tightly coupled"
:-)
I haven't done this yet, but will try it as soon as I can.

Some suggested the obvious ultimate solution: replace the X32 with an SGI
running XwinNMR. This I would LOVE to do, unfortunately all available NMR
funds have just gone on a new AVANCE 300 console and a gradient package for
the
500. The list price for the SGI upgrade, at least in Canada, is quite
steep, especially
since an SGI O2 can be obtained for an academic price of about 10,000 $CDN.

Hopefully. I'll be getting some boards to try and can then purchase the
correct
one.

A few others also confirmed that the AMX console monitor can be replaced
with a standard multi-sync PC monitor provided that you kludge together an
appropriate
cable. Since our monitor is getting quite dim, I will be trying this very
soon.

Cheers, and thanks again!
