Remote backup problem

Dear All,
While trying a remote backup of a SGI from another SGI equipped with a DLT
drive, I get the error message:

select: protocol failure in circuit setup.
tar: tana: /dev/rmt/tps1d5 :I/O error.

(tana is the name of the local host where the tape drive is mounted). Both
SGIs are runing Irix 6.3. The DLT drive functions perfectly well in making
a backup of the local SGI. There is not (to my knowledge) any problem in
connecting between the SGIs - they telnet and ftp to one another fine. I
have followed the instructions to make the DLT a shared device, and the
remote SGI sees the DLT fine - it just won't make a back-up.

Any ideas on this problem would be welcomed. Please direct responses to me
and I will post a solution/summary.
Thanks,
Jeff
