Walkthrough of WebCT startup

Using Microsoft Internet Explorer 4 or higher, or Netscape Navigator 3 or higher, go to the URL …

You will see

Add this to favorites (Internet Explorer) or bookmarks (Navigator). You will return this this URL each time you want to access WebCT.

The first time you come here, you will choose "Course Listings". On subsequent visits, you will choose "my WebCT".

Select "Chemistry" to get …

Choose "Chemistry 1A03 1E03 - Introductory Chemistry I" to get …

You will be prompted for your user name & password. Fill in the "User Name" box with your userid (YourUserID in the above screen image). Use the userid for your McMaster email account assigned to you when you registered - i.e. your MUSS account userid. Your password is your student number. Note that this is only an initial password. You will change this password - see below. When you change your password, it will not be accessible to your instructor - you must remember it. If you do forget your password, then you should see Sheila Marston (BSB 129) or Barbara Russer (BSB 128). They will change your password back to your student number. You can also see Sheila Marston (BSB 129) or Barbara Russer (BSB 128) if you forget your MUSS userid.

After you select "OK" you will get …

You will select "No" since you have not previously set up "my WebCT". You will get …

Choose "Validate" to add "Chemistry 1A03 1E03 - Introductory Chemistry I". You will get …

Here, you type in YourUserID, and password as above. Then you choose "Validate Passwords" and get …

You type in your first & last names here & YourUserID (as above). This is where you change your password to secure your course access. Type in a new password - I recommend the same password you use with your MUSS account. Be assured that we cannot access this password. If you forget it, it will be reset to your student number by Sheila Marston (BSB 129) or Barbara Russer (BSB 128). In such case, you will need to reset your password again to secure course access - see below for the appropriate instructions.

When you have filled out the boxes, choose "Submit" to get …

At this point you can select "Go to my WebCT". Because you have changed your password, you will be prompted for your new password …

Type it in, hit OK & get …

You can now access the course listed in the courses column.

On subsequent visits to http://chemct.chemistry.mcmaster.ca:8900/, you will choose "my WebCT", and be prompted for YourUserID & password (use the secure password you chose above). This will take you to the "my WebCT" page shown above.

Key points about the "my WebCT" page:

Select "options" to change you password. You will need to do this if is ever necessary for Sheila Marston or Barbara Russer to change your password back to your student number.

You can select "Manage Links" to put your favorite links here.

You can go directly to "new bulletin board postings" or "qizzes" from this page. Otherwise use choose "Chemistry 1A03 1E03 …" and go to the course homepage.
