Hello, everyone:

Some days ago, I asked how to editing postscript files. Here are some of
the answer which I got:

Dear Hong,

On the Mac I use GhostScript to be able to *view* postscript files. If you want
to edit a postscript file you will have to open it using MS Word or similar and
just edit the postscript commands (not that I am very good at this...).

PostScript files are plain ASCII files, i. e. they can be edited with any
standard ASCII editor, e. g. vi, emacs.

Since PostScript files are just ASCII text, any editor will work. The trick is knowing *how* to edit it. Take a look at "PostScript Language Reference Manual" by Adobe Systems and published by Addison-Wesley. You might also take a look in comp.lang.postscript or comp.sources.postscript

The only program I know of that does this is Corel 5.0, a commercially available package. I think it is worth the investment since it imports almost every format into an EDITABLE figure. It will run on a 486, but for larger pictures you will need 16M of RAM (at least) otherwise it will be too slow. I dont know of any programs on an SGI that will do this, but if you do find one, please post it so we can get it as well. Later, >>>>>

1. Use ghostscript or ghostview to read the PS and output PCL. Then use ImageAlchemy (HandMade Software) to convert the file to TIFF or PICT. Use the PC/MAc program or your choice to edit that.

2. The program package ImageMagick is a shareware or freeware package (use archie to find a copy) which uses ghostscript to translate PS and does the display and some limited editing all on the SGI. All free or nearly free but a bit hard to set up.

3. If you don't mind the price you could get a copy of Framemaker for the SGI.

Hello, We use the commercial program IslandDraw, which can read colour postscript files and convert the data to "objects", which can then be moved around, deleted etc. Works fine! Ton.

(will send reply to your Aqua message later)

After I got these nice suggestions, I spent a couple of day to figure out which is the best way. Ghostscript is too hard to work for me. I found a program called "psrender", it can convert postscript file to IRIS image file which can be read by IRIS showcase or futher convert to GIF. That's the way I am doing it right now.

You can get "psrender" and "togif" at ftp.sgi.com under dir /graphics.

Many thanks!
