We have a Hewlett Packard 4L laser jet printer attached to the
Aspect Station of our ARX250 spectrometer. Whenever there is a paper jam
in the printer or the paper tray is empty the Aspect Station will quickly
"disable" the printer. After the printer problem is solved we cannot make
it working again by "enable hplj4l" because after a few seconds it is
"disabled" again. We can only "enable" the printer after having rebooted
the Aspect Station. This is not at all convenient since rebooting the
computer requires root password.
Seems like in unix software there should be a statment which
indicates how long a time period is for the printer to be disabled ( time
out ) after it is found not functioning properly. If this period of time
can be changed to say 20 minutes the user would have plenty of time to get
rid of a paper jam or refill the paper tray, and the computer does not have
to be rebooted by the administrator.
Please help if you know the solution to this "time out" problem or
the convenient way to "enable" the printer after it has been "disabled".
