Aspect Station boot tape - caution!

Dear Bruker Users,
I recently had a little difficulty installing the Version
950401 boot tape on our Aspect Station, in fact it took five working
days. After I had spent several hours on the phone to Coventry, a
Bruker service engineer arrived, loaded with various bits and pieces,
and lots more UNIX knowledge than me. It took him seven minutes to sort
it out.

The problem arose because I followed a misleading
instruction in the Release Letter explaining how to create the swap
space required by the CCU. The instruction reads (page four, middle):

cd /usr/diskless/clients/spect mkfile 8000000 swapfile

...which doesn't work. What it should say is:

cd /usr/diskless/clients/spect
mkfile 8000000 swapfile

...which, allegedly, is how the first version would be
interpreted by anyone who knows anything about UNIX! (..er, they look
rather different to me.)

I also found another misleading instruction, but somehow I
spotted that one before I typed it. At the top of page three is the
following line, which you type to load UNIX from the tape:

sash: boot -f tqsd(0,6,4)unix.r3030_std root=sdc0d0s1

Helpfully, they have underlined everything except the
'sash:' prompt, so that you know what to type. Less helpfully, their
underline completely obscures the underscore character between 'r3030'
and 'std', so it looks just like a space! Again, I suppose anyone who
knows anything about UNIX...etc, etc.

I'm quite sure I'm not the only spectroscopist who isn't
also a UNIX expert. This isn't the first time they have sent out
material with errors that should have been rather obvious. It's just as
well we're still under warranty, otherwise this little episode would
have cost us well over 1000 pounds.

Am I alone in thinking that Bruker should smarten up
quality control in its software department?

Best wishes to other victims,

Alan
