How can I get a UNIX generated plot from XWINPLOT into my
WINDOWS word processor?
**
The answer is: Chose one of XWINPLOT's PC compatible formats and transfer to PC.
Here is how to do it:
step #1 : chose EPSI (not: Postscript!!), TIFF or PCX, and plot to a file on the UNIX platform.
EPSI is preferred because it's a vector format; TIFF & PCX is
a heap-of-pixels format (called a 'bitmap' format)
step #2 : From there you have two choices to get this file to WINDOWS:
(I) via network file system (NFS)
(II) via email
For option(I) make sure you choose the naming of your file appropriate to WINDOWS's
8.3 notation, that is 8 chars for filename and 3 chars for extension:
EPSI *.EPS
TIFF *.TIF
PCX *.PCX
step #3 : When opening your word processors image/graphics import proceed to your NFS disk
and grep the file from there.
When using the email approach send the file as an attachment and take it from there
when it arrives on your PC-email system. Some provide attachment viewers that can
learn to take files with certain extensions right out of the mail.
The classical route is of course to save out of the email into a local file and proceed from there
as under option (I)
Amongst the PC applications supporting EPS (including preview in the
application are the Adobe products, Framemaker and CorelDraw (newer versions like
V6). You can also import to WINWord but there is no preview and output may need a
Postscript Printer to be generated.
Background: The key point is to cross platforms with a file that has an appropriate format.
However, there is an almost infinite number of way how you can do this including the
transfer of this file using KERMIT on a slow line, or carrying it over on a 3.5" diskette.
see also: You may want to consider to generate the whole plot in WINNMR for WINDOWS
and use its famous `Preview Editor' to get a WINDOWS-style data handling. You would
transfer the raw (or processed) spectra once instead of returning to XWINPLOT
whenever you need an alteration to be done in the plot itself.
PS: In some respect Postscript is a 'dead end' because modifications and editing is
not supported in a wide variety of applications. We have, however good experience
with converting Postscript into WMF (Windows metafile format) which is importable
into almost every application. There is a tool available called TransverterPro for
about $250 that lets your do this.
