To contine the xwinplot discussion evern further:

Last summer I used xwinplot to create pcx files that I ftp'd to my pc and
incorporated into text. Worked just fine with my hpgl printer.
The pcx images are scaleable, and print out fine. (The images do
look bad on the screen.) However, the new version of xwinplot no longer
supports pcx format (or so it seems). If I save a plot file as "pcx" and
try to bring it into a text file, Word tells me it is not a legal file
type and refuses to insert it. WordPerfect tells me it contains
chararacters (instructions) for postscript printers and refuses to insert
it.

I fail to see why I have to go through an extra conversion step (Ps to
hpgl) with a different program just to get a "legal" data file.
Old-fashioned cut-and-paste is starting to look attractive again.
