The following position is available immediately. Preference will be
given to applicants with experience in NMR and/or Polymer Science,
for appointment at the Senior Research Assistant level.

SENIOR RESEARCH ASSISTANT/ RESEARCH ASSISTANT

The appointee in the School of Physical Sciences (Gardens Point city
campus) will be required to work on an ARC funded project, to study
the factors influencing on-eye dehydration of hydrogel (soft) contact
lenses. The work will involve Nuclear Magnetic Resonance (NMR) Studies
of water binding and mobility in hydrogel biomaterials. It will
involve collaboration with Johnson and Johnson Vision Products and
groups at the University of New South Wales and the University of
Technology (Sydney). Appointment is until the end of 1999, with the
possibility of extension for up to a further 12 months.

QUALIFICATIONS/SKILLS: At least a good honours degree in chemistry,
physics or materials science is required. A higher degree and/or
research experience in NMR or polymer science would be highly
desirable for appointment at the SRA level.

SALARY: $27 744 to $39 017 pa (depending on qualifications and
experience)

SCHOOL OF PHYSICAL SCIENCES

The School of Physical Sciences was inaugurated on the 1st of January
1997. It comprises the majority of the previous schools of Physics and
Chemistry and is located across several adjacent buildings on the main
QUT Gardens Point (city centre) campus.

The research activities of the School are focused in two University
Research Centres: the Centre for Medical and Health Physics and the
Centre for Instrumental and Developmental Chemistry, as well as a
Research Concentration in Materials Technology which is shared jointly
with the School of Mechanical, Manufacturing and Medical Engineering.
The School is also a participant in the Centre for Rehabilitation
Science and Engineering. The School has a flourishing postgraduate
enrolment, offering Masters Research (SC80) and Ph.D. (IF49) programs
in a wide range of topics relevant to the research interests of its
staff, together with Coursework Masters (PH38) programs in Medical
Physics and Medical Ultrasound. A range of Consultancy Services and
Continuing Professional Education courses are offered by individual
staff members and groups within the School.

The School offers undergraduate (Bachelor of Applied Science) majors
in Chemistry, Physics and Medical Radiations Technology. The Medical
Radiations Technology (PH38) program is primarily aimed at the
training of Radiographers in either Medical Imaging or Radiotherapy
Technology. The Chemistry and Physics majors, which form part of the
SC01 program are also vocationally oriented and applied in nature,
with a strong practical emphasis. They can be taken in combination
with co-majors in a variety of disciplines both within the Faculty of
Science and across Faculties. Co-majors which can be combined with the
Chemistry major include Applied Chemistry, Forensic Science or
Materials Science, while in the case of the Physics major, there are
co-majors in Medical and Health Physics or Materials Science. Honours
programs (SC60) are also offered in both Physics and Chemistry.
