You have to use the HP Laserjet IIIP, IV, or higher. There is a bug in the
HPGL for the regular III so it will not work. Also, get lots of RAM for the
printer - it will help with the bigger plots.
Another thing, be sure to use Legal paper, the letter-sized paper is
actually A4 (at the Aspect 3000) and you will lose some plots on the
automatic expansion plots (it can't be fixed without altering the APXB/APX
functions, which I was not able to figure out. Legal paper works great.
In general, the plots are much nicer and cheaper than on the pen plotter but
you do have to give up the bigger page sizes.
Please note that this implementation was done at Western Washington
University. I have since left that sight so I am limited to my recollection
for further information.

Subject: Aspect 3000 -> HP 4000 T laser printer
Dear Spinlanders,
Some time ago, I posted a request for help in getting an Aspect 3000
computer
connected to an HP 4000 T laser printer.
The Bruker Instruments computer technical support team said that it would
not
be possible.
Thanks to all of those who shared your experiences. Thanks to Dr. George
Furst for the solution to our problem.
Dr. Furst wrote that he uses serial to parallel converters on several Aspect
3000 systems to print to various HP laser printers. For those who may find
it useful, the technical details follow.
The serial to parallel converter was obtained from Global Computer Supplies,
1-800-845-6225. Their part number is C6180. The microswitch settings are
switch # 0=off, 1=on parameter
1 1
2 0 hardware flow control, RTS/CTS
3 0
4 1
5 1 9600 baud
6 1 8 data bits
7 0
8 0 no parity
9 0 serial to parallel conversion
10 0 normal operation
>From the HP LaserJet 4000 series printer configuration menu, change
personality from AUTO to PCL.
>From Aspect 3000 computer, select HPLJ3P with CA command.
Issue TOPL command. Issue PX command. Issue NP command.
If you share the same printer with a PC that needs to print postscript
files,
remember to change the printer's personality back to AUTO.
