Repacking Unix disks.

Hi,
I have always known of the benefits of repacking Unix disks from
time to time. They become fragmented and file access times
deteriorate.

I am fortunate to have a 'spare' 2Gb drive on our AMX400. Today I
copied our one 2Gb drive to the spare. The transfer took 2.5 hours.
After reformating the original drive and making a new Bruker-File-
System I copied the data back in a little over one hour!

It is a hassle but it is well worth it!

And how do I come to have a spare 2 Gb drive???
Some time ago it failed utterly. No response even at the lowest
level. We replaced it. I then, reasoning that something might be
jammed inside, applied an impulse along each of its major axes,
after which it worked. We don't trust it for long term data storage
but, with everyone backed up, it is ideal for repacking.

Sincerely

Andy
