There are some surprising revelations about solid state indium NMR in the
sci-fi novel "Timescape" by Gregory Benford (1980). The book is about a
struggling assistant professor at UCSD whose quest for tenure is
complicated by severe intermittent noise problems in his spectrometer.
Without giving too much of the plot away, I can say that the source of the
problem is external to the spectrometer, and that the instrument problems
I've had to troubleshoot have been pretty dull by comparison.
