Greetings all,

I have a follow up question on the following post from the archives:

With some suggestions from Bruker Canada I recently did a Y2000 check on
our vintage 1989 AMX360, also with CPU/3, with the following results:
If you are running UNIX V.960101, it is fully compliant. The date and day
of the week switch properly from Dec. 31, 1999 to Jan. 1, 2000. It also
recognizes 2000 as a leap year and again correctly changes both the date
and day of the week. I don't know about earlier versions, but this one
does work just fine with an older system.
If, like us, you have the 2-channel interface, you are restricted to using
UXNMR V.920801, as later versions will not work properly wihout the MCI.
The spectrometer still works and stores the spectra with the correct date
in the data directory, but this version of UXNMR cannot cope with dates
past 1999, and every time you try to do something which accesses the date
(e.g. plotting, dpa), you get an error message on the screen which must be
manually cleared before the command is enacted. The commands do still
work, however. Bruker suggest removing the DATE parameter from the format
files used for plotting and printing, but this means that you no longer
have the date appearing in your plots. If any one has a solution for this
, I would be glad to hear of it.

The Y2K conformity table at Bruker's website:
http://www.bruker.com/y2000/docucntr/docu0002/nmr.htm
states that:

For AMX/ARX with X32 running UXNMR 970101 and UNIX 960101: it is PARTIALLY
compliant. "UXNMR 970101 is fully compliant. Also the date rolls over
correctly, but after a reboot the 'date' routine doesn't allow to set dates
beyond end of 1999. Please see your local Bruker representative for your
upgrade options. We recommend to upgrade to a contemporary SGI computer."
I believe that Bruker is saying that the hardware/software will roll over
fine and work as long as you never reboot the computer, but if you do need
to, there is no way to reset the date past 1999 merely because of the 'date'
routine. It seems to me that a patch could be supplied that would allow
this routine to set dates past 2K since the hardware and other software
seems to support it. Has anyone looked into this?
Of course, the recommended fix, upgrading to a SGI, requires an additional
$30 to $50K plus the cost of the computer, which may soon be no longer
supported if they migrate completely to PC platforms. (note recent postings
on the AMMRL concerning compatibilities of different IRIX versions,
different XWIN-NMR versions, etc.) I seriously doubt that the majority of
AMX owners have this type of cash just laying about.
Thanks in advance for your input on this issue. I will post a summary of
responses. Please let me know if you wish to remain anonymous or do not
want your reply posted.

Yours in resonance,
Brian
