Here is the Bruker report bug info:
This problem could be because you have shadow passwording.
Here is the fix:

Program: XWIN-NMR

Part Number:
Short Description: nmrsuperuser password is not accepted by expinstall
etc.
Full Description:
expinstall and probably other commands which prompt for the
NMR Superuser password do not accept this password although
it was typed in correctly. This happens when the NMR
Superuser is in /etc/shadow, not in /etc/passwd.
Workaround:
1) Move the nmrsuperuser entry from /etc/shadow to
/etc/passwd.
OR :
2) Change the nmrsuperuser to root
- open a UNIX shell
- become superuser: type su - root
- cd /<var>/prog/bin
- ./installnmr <var> root
where <var> is the path where XWIN-NMR is installed.
I ran into some problems when I tried to run 'installnmr'(a Perl script)
because my current Perl libraries are not compatible with the 'installnmr'
script. That may be another side-effect of the patch download although I
haven't investigated that issue yet.
Here is Jane Strouse's clever workaround which is what I ended up doing:
Dear Don,
If you are using a shadow file for passwords (generally recommended)
you will have this problem. I have gotten around it before by editing the
password file to put in a password for the NMR superuser. Just type out
/etc/shadow, select it's encrypted password with the mouse, then insert it
into /etc/passwd in the usual field for the password of the NMR superuser.
Jane
