Dr. Kazim Agha, Partner and Patent Agent, Ridout & Maybee LLP, Toronto

Intellectual Property (IP) refers to ideas or creations of the mind and can help its proprietor in benefitting from it. As such, intellectual property can be a significant asset of an entity (individual or company), and its protection can play a pivotal role in the development and growth of the entity.

The presentation will give a broad introductory overview of the different types of intellectual properties, with a focus on utility patents, requirements for obtaining a utility patent, steps to take before filing and discuss filing strategies.

Brief Bio

Kazim is a partner and patent agent at Ridout & Maybee LLP. His practice focuses in the areas of life sciences, including, chemistry, biotechnology, clean technology, and mechanical & medical devices. He advises clients on intellectual property aspects, including building and managing an intellectual property portfolio, drafting and prosecution of patent applications, providing patentability, validity, infringement and freedom to operate opinions.

Kazim is an associate editor of the Canadian Patent Reporter (CPR), and writes and presents on intellectual property matters, including patents and IP strategy. In addition, Kazim is recognized as an expert on international intellectual property matters by the American Chemical Society (ACS).

Also, he is significantly involved and engaged within the chemical society, as a director of the local sections of the Chemical Institute of Canada (CIC) and in helping organize conferences, including the upcoming CCCE (CSC conference) in Quebec City as Chair of the Industrial Symposium.

Prior to his legal career, Kazim was a senior research chemist at a major chemical company where he was responsible for oligonucleotide and other active pharmaceutical ingredient (API) projects from R&D to manufacturing, including process validation and pre-approval inspection (PAI) preparation.
