Inner-shell spectroscopies and spectro-microscopies using electron beams and synchrotron light

Chemists usually think of valence-shell electronic excitation (i.e. UV-visible spectroscopy) when they wish to learn something about a substance through a study of its electronic structure. In fact, there are many advantages to the use of inner-shell spectroscopies for chemical and materials investigations. These include: a much less congested spectroscopy than UV-visible; atom-localised electronic states such that the electronic structure about specific elements can be investigated even in the presence of many other elements. My group is at the forefront of the field of inner-shell spectroscopy,in terms of evolving spectroscopic interpretations, developing new instrumentation & techniques, and opening up new applications.

At McMaster we perform a variety of gas phase electron scattering experiments which are mainly aimed at advancing fundamental understanding of the experimental techniques and the spectroscopy.

At the Canadian Light Source (Saskatoon) and at the Advanced Light Source (Berkeley) we have helped develop state-of-the-art X-ray microscopes that are opening up now horizons in the study of the microstructure and nanostructure of materials, environmental samples, polymers and many other novel systems.
