Terminology for Redox Reactions

• OXIDATION—loss of electron(s) by a

species; increase in oxidation number.

• REDUCTION—gain of electron(s);

decrease in oxidation number.

• OXIDIZING AGENT—electron acceptor;

species is reduced.

• REDUCING AGENT—electron donor; species is oxidized.
