TUTORIALS

Tutorials (labelled TUT in your personal timetable) are held every other week on the same days as labs, but alternate with the labs. They are scheduled at  2:30 - 3:20 p.m. or 3:30 - 4:20 p.m. Tutorials begin for some students during the week of January 15, and for others during the week of January 22.  Tutorials concentrate on the development of problem-solving skills. Tutorial attendance is mandatory. Students who are exempted from the labs are not exempted from attending tutorials. Attendance at tutorials will be counted in the determination of the course mark for Chemistry 1AA3. All tutorials must be attended in order to receive credit for the tutorials. You must attend tutorials on the assigned day and time with your assigned tutorial teaching assistant(TA).

LABORATORIES

Labs are held from 2:30 to 5:30 p.m., Monday to Thursday, in rooms 103, 104, 105, 106, and 124 of the Burke Science Building (BSB). Your personal timetable will indicate your assignment to a lab day and room, and either Lab Week O or Lab Week E. If you have not been assigned to a lab group, see the Instructional Assistant in BSB/128 as soon as possible. Your TA in the lab is different from your tutorial TA.

You must attend all labs on your assigned day and time in your assigned room.

3 hour laboratory periods begin at 2:30 p.m. during the week of January 15 for Lab Week O students; Lab Week E students have tutorials that week and start labs at 2:30 p.m. during the week of January 22. Consult page 2 of the Chemistry 1A03/1AA3 laboratory manual for the lab schedule.

Safety goggles must be worn at all times in the laboratory. You must have these goggles, available at the University bookstore, before your first scheduled lab.

All students repeating Chemistry 1AA3 who want to be exempted from the lab program must see the Instructional Assistant by Wed. January 10. In general, the criterion used for lab exemption is twofold: completion of all lab experiments with a minimum mark of 50% in each and every lab and an overall lab average of  70%.

REQUIRED BOOKS

1. The textbook for the course is Chemistry , 6th edition, by Chang. This must be purchased at the Bookstore during the first week of classes. The text is bundled with a Solutions Manual, a Study Guide, and several CDs.

2. Laboratory Notebooks and Laboratory Manuals are the same as for Chemistry 1A03 (September 2000).  If needed, these must be purchased from the Year One Secretary (BSB/129) by January 12.

THODE LIBRARY

The Thode Science and Engineering Library (see attached map) circulation desk on the main floor contains reserve materials for Chemistry 1AA3. These include test and tutorial solutions, as well as tests from previous years.

A Chemistry tutor is available in the basement of the library for one to one and group assistance. Hours will be posted. Group study rooms are also located in the basement.

THE YEAR ONE SECRETARY

The secretary in BSB/129 keeps all records of your marks and can arrange an appointment with any of the course instructors if you are unable to get in touch with them.

WebCT

Chemistry 1AA3 will make extensive use of WebCT (short for Web Course Tools), an integrated set of tools for delivering course components over the Internet. For example,  sample tests, previous year's tests, personalized quizzes, a public bulletin board, and a calendar of Chemistry 1AA3 events will be available.

Since WebCT courses are maintained in a secure environment on the Internet, only students registered in Chemistry 1AA3 have access to the materials. In order to login to WebCT you need:

1. the internet address : http://chemct.chemistry.mcmaster.ca:8900/

2. your user name : it is your McMaster MUSS account userid (if the Registrar has not informed the Year I secretary that you are enrolled in the course, we will not have your userid on our database)

3.your password : initially, it is your seven digit McMaster student number; you are encouraged to change your password after your initial login.
A sample walk-through the login procedure is found at http://www.chemistry.mcmaster.ca/~dumontr/chem1a3/webct_startup.htm

It is strongly recommended that you read the walk-through before your WebCT login.

If you attempt to login to WebCT and find that you are not registered under the expected user name and password, please see Sheila Marston in BSB 129 as soon as possible. She will be able to get you registered in WebCT if you are registered for Chemistry 1AA3 and you can produce your student ID card. This may require that you obtain a MUSS email account if you do not already have one.

It is essential that you login to WebCT as soon as possible, since your personalized quizzes  are located there.

WebCT can be accessed from your home or dormitory room, or from over 200 computers linked to the University's network; these are located in BSB 241/242/244/245, JHE 233A/234, ABB 166, HSC 2B24C, KTH B110/B121/B123. Their current hours of operation are posted outside each computer lab. You might wish to obtain a proxy server account for the computer clusters. (You will not need a proxy account to do the quizzes, but you may want to access outside chemistry links, in which case you will need one.) You can register for such an account online through MUGSI. If you do not have regular access to the internet and will not be on campus regularly, please contact your instructor immediately.

If you have any difficulties in the clusters, ask for help from a Student Consultant.

More information about WebCT quizzes can be found at

http://www.chemistry.mcmaster.ca/~chem1a3/webquiz.htm

TUTORIAL AND TEST SOLUTIONS

The solutions to tutorials and tests will be placed in binders on reserve in the Thode Library at the Main Circulation Desk. These binders will be labelled as follows:
