INFORMATION SHEET FOR CHEMISTRY
1AA3 SUMMER 2002
Please use these sheets to
answer most of your questions about the organization of the course. AFTER CAREFULLY READING THEM, WE SUGGEST YOU
KEEP THEM WITH YOUR NOTES FOR FUTURE REFERENCE.
COURSE OBJECTIVES
Chemistry 1AA3 is an
introductory chemistry course intended: (1) to provide some basic factual
material about chemical equilibria, kinetics and organic chemistry, and (2) to
discuss these facts in terms of simple concepts and theories, illustrated with
practical examples and chemical demonstrations.
Examples of current issues related to chemistry will be presented in
class on a regular basis.
Pre-requisite: Chem 1A03 or 1E03. Anti-requisite: Chem 1A06.
LECTURE TIMES
Tues. and Thurs.,
TUTORIALS
Tutorials are held every Tuesday at
LABORATORIES
Labs are held every week on Thursday, from
Students should read pages 1-35
of the lab manual and do all the assigned
exercises before attending their first regular lab. You should also read all of experiment #6 and
do the prelab questions before coming to
the lab. These questions will count
towards your lab mark.
Safety goggles must be worn at
all time in the laboratory. You must
have these goggles, available from the University bookstore, before the first
scheduled lab. Goggles will also be
available, for $12.00, from BSB 125 on June 25 and July 4 and from the
secretary (BSB/129) the following week.
All students repeating Chemistry
1AA3 who want to be exempted from the lab program must see the Course
Coordinator by June 27. In general,
the criterion used for exemption is twofold:
completion of all labs with a minimum mark of 50% in each and every lab
and an overall lab average of at least 70%.
RETURN OF MARKED LABORATORY REPORTS
In your introductory laboratory
period you will be assigned a slot number by your laboratory demonstrator. In BSB/129 there are numbered boxes
corresponding to your slot number. All
of your marked lab reports will be returned to you via the numbered boxes in
BSB/129.

WebCT
Chemistry 1AA3 will make use of
WebCT (short for Web Course Tools), an integrated set of tools for delivering
course components over the Internet. For
example, sample tests, previous year's tests, personalized quizzes, a public
bulletin board, and a calendar of Chemistry 1AA3 events will be available.
Since WebCT courses are
maintained in a secure environment on the Internet, only students registed in
Chemistry 1AA3 have access to the materials.
In order to login to WebCT you need:
1. the internet address: http://chemct.
mcmaster.ca:8900/public/CHEM1AA3_S
2. your user name: it is your McMaster MUSS account userid (if
the Registrar has not informed the Year I secretary that you are enrolled in
the course, we will not have your userid on our database)
3. your password: initially, it is your seven digit McMaster
student number; you are encouraged to change your password after your initial
login.
A sample walk-through the login
procedure is found at:
You may need to sign into the course by creating a “My WebCT”
identity. You should only do this if you
have been added late to the course.
A sample walk-through of this
login procedure is found at:
http://www.chemistry.mcmaster.ca./~austen/chem1a3/webct
startup.htm
If you attempt to login to WebCT
and find that you are not registered under the expected user name and password,
please see Sheila Marston in BSB 129 as soon as possible. She will be able to get you registered in WebCT
if you are registered for Chemistry
1AA3 and you can produce your student ID card.
This may require that you obtain a MUSS email account if you do not
already have one.
It is essential that you login
to WebCT as soon as possible, since your
personalized Quiz 1 due July 5 at
WebCT can be accessed from your
home or dormitory room, or from over 200 computers linked to the University's
network; these are located in BSB 241/242/244/245, JHE 233A/234, ABB 166, HSC
2B24C, KTH B110/B121/B123. Their current
hours of operation are posted outside each computer lab. You might wish to obtain a proxy server
account for the computer clusters. (You
will not need a proxy account to do the quizzes, but you may want to access
outside chemistry links, in which case you will need one.) You can register for such an account online
through MUGSI. If you do not have
regular access to the internet and will not be on campus regularly, please
contact your instructor immediately.
