Fast Radiationless Decay of the Electronic Excited States of Several Guaiazuleno-Substituted Chromophores: Making Something Out of Nothing

Absorption and emission spectra were collected for various guaiazulenocyanine dyes and azulenic retinal analogs in several different solvents. These data (or lack thereof) were used to calculate upper limits of quantum yield of fluorescence as well as radiative decay rate constants for the S₁ and S₂ states. The photophysical properties of these compounds and their application will be discussed.
