XWINNMR via ISDN from PC to INDY

A while ago I posted an inquiry regarding the remote XWINNMR acqusition
/processing via ISDN line from a PC to INDY. Somewhat surprisingly, only one
reply arrived (thanks!) and a few private follow-up requests.

After almost 2 months of trying various configurations, I opted for one that
finally worked nicely at 128Kbaud (multilink PPP), namely an Ethernet card
(INTEL EtherExpress 10BaseT) in the PC, connected to an external ISDN router
(Ascend Communications Pipeline25-1U-RTR-FX). Thus I set up a separate LAN on
the remote PC with up to 4 possible workstations.

The LAN software I use on the PC is OnNet2.1 and X-OnNet3.0 (this is the
X-Session software needed to run XWINNMR remotely) from FTP Software. The major
initial headaches within this setup had to do with the fact that the INDY dials
a multilink ISDN connection using both assigned numbers, while the Ascend dials
the same number twice. SGI, Ascend and Ameritech (local ISDN phone provider)
Tech Suport were very helpful in troubleshooting. It was Ameritech that had to
add a feature (call forwarding database..) to the ISDN service to allow for the
multilink PPP at 128Kb.

Tha above is by no means the least expensive option (<$1000). There are several
ISDN internal cards for PCs on the market in the $300-500 range that work under
Win95, and the latest WinNews describes the Microsoft ISDN Accelerator Pack for
Win95. Earlier I tried using an IBM Waverunner ISDN board with Windows3.1 but
the software included is incomplete, buggy and the Tech Support for this
product below any expectation. The cost here for the ISDN service is about
$40/month at each end of the link.

As far as performance, one can notice some annoying screen refreshes in XWINNMR
1D spectra, but overall it is adequate. Phasing 2Ds is no problem. Some
problems related to colors in 2Ds can be dealt with by clicking inside and
outside the respective windows.

For more details I will answer individually.
