Dear Colleagues,
For your information the feeling I got from the responses to my query was
that the modern generation of digital scopes were quite satisfactory for nmr
work. Also local enquiries showed that HP and Tektronix had discontinued
analogue oscilloscopes in the sort of frequency ranges which we require.
Regarding attenuators several people sent me addresses which I will
reproduce below. I have no connection with any of the organisaion and
recognise that it may not be a complete list of suppliers.
Thanks to all the people who took the trouble to reply to my posting.

A good Australian supplier of rf attenuators is RF Devices, 9 Lyn Pde, Hxtn
Pk, NSW, 02 9607 8811, Fax 9607 3763.

For attenuators that you want, Lucas Weinschel, PO Box 6001, Gaithersburg,
MD 20884-6001 USA, 301-948-3434, fax 301-948-3625

Check out Bird. I _highly_ recommend their products. They sell
attenuators ranging from 5 w continuous to 4 kw continuous. We use their
25 watts series 8306 (5 kw peak for 5 microsec. max.). They are
available in 3, 6, 10, 20, and 30 db. Among other things, we use them
for our scope to look at the output of our rf amplifiers for CP/MAS. The
only time we've smoked one was when we tried shoving _LONG_ pulses (tens
of MILLIseconds) around 2kw into it. Several years ago, a student
overloaded one, it overheated and melted into the vinyl tile floor, but
it's still perfectly OK!!! Very robust, and excellent electronic
characteristics. vswr <= 1.25 dc to 4 GHz, atten. flat to 0.8 dB or
better from dc to 2 GHz.
