POST-DOCTORAL POSITION AVAILABLE

DESCRIPTION: A two-year post-doctoral position with USDA-Agricultural
Research Service is available for an organic chemist to join a team whose
goal is to elucidate the mechanisms by which ferulate and its dimers effect
plant cell wall cross-linking. Strategically labeled ferulates and
dehydrodiferulates will be synthesized and incorporated into synthetic and
biomimetic lignins and analyzed via correlative NMR techniques [see, for
example, J. Chem. Soc. Perkin Trans. 1, p. 2961-9 and 2971-80, 1992].
Synthetic models of expected/determined products will be synthesized to
allow full spectral characterization. Analysis of plant materials, some
isolated from plants grown in enriched 13CO2, will provide unequivocal
elucidation of those processes which occur in vivo.

FACILITY: The US Dairy Forage Research Center is a federal lab on the
University of Wisconsin-Madison campus. The incumbent will work in a modern
synthetic laboratory with modern NMR instrumentation and GC-MS on site.
Larger NMR facilities on campus are also accessible.

QUALIFICATIONS: Knowledge and experience in organic synthesis is the
primary requirement. A knowledge of NMR practices is desirable but an
enthusiasm to learn NMR methodologies is appropriate. Knowledge of plant
chemistry is desirable but not essential. Ph.D. Required.

EMPLOYMENT: There are some employment restrictions for non-U.S. citizens.
Eligible candidates will receive consideration without regard to race,
color, religion, sex, age, nondisqualifying physical handicap, or national
origin.

BENEFITS: Salary commensurate with experience (34,622-$41,543). Annual
and sick leave are provided. Employee will be covered by the Federal
Employees Retirement System and will be eligible to participate in health
and life insurance programs.

DEADLINE: The position is available immediately. Applications will be
accepted until a suitable candidate is identified.
