I am about to begin a series of experiments on an MSL-300 that require
accurate temperature calibration. I have obtained a calibration chart
that correlates temperature with the chemical shift of methanol. I have
two questions about this technique.

1) Does anyone know the origin of this technique? Is there a literature
reference?

2) How important is the purity of the methanol? Is commercially available
methanol acceptable or do we need to distill and dry it ourselves?
