We run both ways. A walk on proton/carbon machine which uses a bar code
reader to enable screen displays and track instrument usage.
This instrument is always logged on, users copy the files to their
network account. The only negative is that creative users can
"customize" the system and leave the next user scratching their head.
Its a Varian so the solaris/openwin/vnmr login isn't fast.
Everyone on the DRX has their own account. Indy login's are relatively
fast, and forgetting to log out isn't a problem because we charge for
the amount of time logged on. It is nice that users can clutter only
their own desktop. Students seem to like both ways (unless they
forget their barcode card or their password:).
I think that the soon to be released Xwin-nmr 2.0 has some changes
in the file structure. You won't have to save to a /data directory.
