I appreciate being asked, officially, what the `fate' of Mac WINNMR is going to be.
My answer is in this email, and I hope you come to understand why it is the way it
is.
I also take it that your questions were left unanswered because of some general lack
of `official' information (not unlike the situation was for the WINDOWS software
until the WINNMR Homepage went online earlier this week). Please understand that
Bruker is well aware of the fact that there are many users out there that have Macs
and want to continue using them. Mac WINNMR is supported, but the priorities have to
be in the context outlined below. If you have questions on Mac WINNMR, please email
to software@bruker.com for support.
I also know that many of you Mac users just *hate* to be asked to switch to some
other platform as some kind of a one-fits-all answer to any Mac-related issues. Be
assured you share this feeling with WINDOWS users being asked to consider Mac, OS/2
or UNIX, with OS/2 users being asked to use WINDOWS and all other possible
combinations of this kind. I appreciate your feelings, and I am not asking anyone to
switch platforms, although some people would love to see that happen.
Unfortunately, given the current market demand and uncertainty regarding future
trends in Mac usage, we cannot justify a major investment in Macintosh software at
this time.
HERE IS WHAT WILL HAPPEN WITH MAC WINNMR
Of course we know that the distribution of Macs we meet in the field is uneven.
History delivered a situation that finds entire institutions running either on one
platform or the other. And the question of who else uses their selection is of little
practical relevance for an organization that has chosen Macs. *That* is the reason
why Bruker has decided to have *one* more release of Mac WINNMR. Don't cheer too loud
because I have to repeat that it at this time there are no plans to develop the Mac
branch of our software and its functionality any further beyond version 3.6 . The
demand is simply not there at this time.
As you all know, Bruker features a fully functionalized suite of WINDOWS programs,
whose functionality embraces almost everything from processing, plotting towards
high-end tools for structure elucidation, chemical shift prediction and archiving.
WINNMR for WINDOWS is just one component in this concept of Bruker Software Solutions
and all the applications share information on a level that is unheard of by any other
spectroscopy software out there.
Mac WINNMR users that want or need to cross-upgrade towards WINNMR for WINDOWS will
find an attractive upgrade path available at the time Mac WINNMR 3.6 will be
released. The release of Mac WINNMR will be within this summer and it will be
announced well ahead of time.
Again thanks for your concern on this matter. I do hope this email answers your
questions. If not, please let me know.
My best regards to ALL of you
Mick
