Dear George,
I have experienced exactly this symptom (twice) on an Aspect 3000
computer. The problem was cured by replacing a fairly large capacitor on
the output of the 5 volt power supply. It was a readily available type,
cost about a dollar, and took a few minutes to replace. I would at least
try it if I were you.
