In partial response to Schoberth's question, we have absolutely no problem
changing linewidths with Adobe Illustrator (Mac, but I gather it is the
same on Windows). We do this routinely for 1D and 2D slides -- often we
increase the line thicknesses for slides, but not for print. The question
of why the line comes in sooooo thin is interesting!
