Dear nmr-users at UiO, nmr users in Norway and Bruker users worldwide.

If you want to run xwinnmr on the Macintoshes almost as easy as on the PCs
try the following.

1. Download MacX 1.5 from the UiO server and install it
straightforward. (using "Velger" and "fellestjester" on the mac,) Or get
the MacX program from another place.

2. Decide which Indy you will use for running the program. Select
either grignard or overhauser ( at UiO) to avoid conflicts with people
acquring data on the spectrometers.

3. Log in at the indy, start xwinnmr and reduce the size to
approximately 15 x 15 cm and log out correctly from the indy. "kill",
"shmrm" and "exit". The point to reduce the size is that if you do not do
this the xwinnmr window will be larger than the Mac screen and you can not
resize the size of the xwinnmr window on the Macintosh.

4. Star MacX on the macintosh. Select the REMOTE option and find the
submenue NEW COMMAND.

5. In the field REMOTE COMMAND type:

/usr/bin/X11/xterm -ls -title "®ingolf xterm" -sb -display "®display"

® is typed by pressing the three keys: shift alt 2 simultaneously.

6. Select COMMAND NAME: overhauser or grignard (or for users
elewhere in the world your own computer name)

7. Select DISPLAY: color rootless

8. Select OUTPUT: Pop up

9. Select METHOD: rexec

10. Type in your UNIX username at USERNAME

11. Click on SET.

12. You will now find the new command overhauser or grignard
(depending upon what you did under 6.) under REMOTE

13. Doing this a window will come up telling you to type in your UNIX
password.

14. The xterm window will appear shortly on the mac if you are in the
same network at the Indy computer (eg: the UiO network).

15. Start xwinnmr as you do on the Indy. Log out the same way also.
"kill", "shmrm" and exit.

16. A good idea is to have as many points as possible on the Mac
screen, 800 x 600 is a minimum. If your mac can use larger numbers (1024 x
768 for instance) this will help you.

-------

The plots and prints will end up at the plotter at the Indy. If you use
the supplementary program xwinplot you can select network plotters, use
the commands sent out by Hege Karlsen half a year ago. Kindly ask her if
you do not have kept this information (hege.karlsen@kjemi.uio.no)

---------

If you are not on the UiO network you can use the MacPPP program to
establish connection to the UiO network (or your own network) . This is a
little complicated and interested people can contact me for additional
information.

Sincerely
FR
