temperature controller communications

Last week, our unix system administrator installed some
improved security measures on all of our computers,
including the SGI O2 that is attached to our DRX-400.
These measures worked so well that the spectrometer and
the computer couldn't talk to each other. So he put
everything in the nmr lab back to its original configuration
and the spectrometer works now, except that I can't get
my computer to talk to the temperature controller.
When I type 'edte', I get the error message:

edte: Unable to open the communication channel.

Does anyone have any ideas on how to start trouble-
shooting this problem?

Thanks.
