IRIX 6.5

Dear BUM,

In the near future, I plan to put IRIX 6.5 on an O2 computer
(currently running IRIX 6.3) that is running an ARX500 using xwinnmr 2.6.
I gather that this should be no particular problem. On the other hand I
also have an ARX400 using xwinnmr 2.6, but in that case the computer is an
Indy running IRIX 5.3. I gather that there are potential problems with
IRIX 6.5 on the Indy. The impression I get from comments on BUM and/or
AMMRL and some discussion with various people is that the Indy performance
nose dives under 6.5 no matter how much memory you may add to it. There is
one particular improvement in 6.5 over 5.3 that I would very much like to
have, but not at the expense of overall performance. I have installed all
the IRIX 5.3 patches that came on the xwinnmr 2.6 CD, so presumably I have
all that Bruker recommends for 5.3. I don't really know whether those
patches will yield Y2K compliance or not.

So, does anyone have any advice as to what is the best approach for
Indy's? In the light of a little extra time since the topic has been
mentioned, is it really that bad? I would like to go to 6.5 if there is a
way to make it work. Does anyone know precisely what patches are required
to make 5.3 Y2K compliant? Would any Bruker software people care to comment?

Thanks in advance for helpful hints.

Jane
