optimizing space on system disk

BUMers,
After installing all SGI recommended IRIX5.3 patches on the Indy
running our DRX500 we were left with ~30MB on the systemdisk
containing IRIX and XWINNMR 2.5 (1 GB) .
In an attempt to clear some disk space I removed all on line books
from the Iris installation using the software manager.
After rebooting everything seemed fine but after a few minutes a
message "famd died" pops up, and all dektop icons vanish.
Furthermore, the SYSLOG file fills up with many errormessages per
seconds (accumulating ~50MB over night). Rebooting didn't solve
that, and reinstalling just the removed components resulted in
complete chaos, and I ended up reinstalling from scratch.

My question is whether anybody knows about components within the
Bruker recommended IRIX installation which still can be removed
safely . Has anybody faced similar problems. I would have thought
that the on line documentation is one of the non essentials, but that
seems not to be the case (installing from scratch without the on line
books resulted in the same problem) . The other option would be to
get a larger hard drive I guess...
Thanks for any advise

Holger
