Abstract: Adventures in startup science
This presentation will give a new perspective on the analysis of radioactive pharmaceutical products. Positron Emission Tomography(PET) is a clinical imaging method that relies on short-lived radioactive tracers. 10-hour expiry time of PET tracers created a unique set of challenges in the routine production of these products. The final analysis of the product is particularly frustrating because it involves manual handling of highly radioactive material.
A small start-up turned this problem into an opportunity to improve the manufacturing process. Along the way, the company developed some counterintuitive analytical techniques: radioactivity was measured without a radiation detector and a colorless compound was quantified with colorimetric analysis .
