Chemistry at McMaster offers an exciting hub of research and graduate teaching. Our Chemistry Program provides graduate students with a wide range of chemistry research opportunities  and cutting-edge projects across all sub-disciplines of chemistry: organic/polymer, inorganic, physical, theoretical, and analytical. Our collaborative atmosphere fosters a broad range of multidisciplinary research projects with a materials, radiochemistry, or biological focus.

All students can take advantage of the unique facilities at McMaster, including the Brockhouse Institute for Materials Research (BIMR), the McMaster Nuclear Reactor, and the Biointerfaces Institute (BI).  Our state-of-the-art laboratory space was renovated in 2018.

Our intensive Chemistry program focuses on making world-class research advances and training top-calibre researchers. We provide:

  • opportunities to conduct cutting-edge research in all disciplines of modern chemical science;
  • close mentorship from award-winning faculty members;
  • access to the most advanced instrumentation and research facilities; and
  • a collegial and supportive atmosphere, including a highly active graduate student community.

Our students conduct original, independent research of a calibre publishable in top-ranked international journals. The program emphasizes written and oral presentation of research results, with the ultimate goal of training each student to develop creative solutions to research problems, to initiate innovative new directions in their research, and to independently acquire, interpret and present data in professional, publishable form, whatever their career direction. McMaster’s School of Graduate Studies offers additional professional skills development opportunities.  Formal instruction within the program is provided through courses that focus on fundamental knowledge within the student’s chosen sub-discipline and area of research. Course requirements are typically completed within the first year for Masters degrees and in the first two years of the Ph.D. program.
