Title: Entering New Chemical Space with Isolable Bis-silylenes
Date: Thursday, May 4, 2023
Time: 1:30-2:30
Room: ABB 165
Hosts: David Emslie and Mike Brook
Abstract: Recently, a variety of isolable N-heterocyclic silylenes were realized, which show a non-trivial versatile reactivity pattern with respect to selective carbon-heteroatom bond activation of organic substrates based on divalent silicon. Over the last few years we have shown that the reactivity of silylenes can be significantly enhanced towards very stable small molecules if two silylene moieties are placed in close proximity in the same molecular entity, giving rise to cooperative bond activation. These striking features will be demonstrated with a variety of bis-silylene compounds (and compared with related bis-phosphines and carbenes) bearing different spacers. Moreover, the particularly strong Lewis-donor abilities of bis-silylenes enable the stabilization of transition-metals and main-group elements in unusual low oxidation states which even enable new chemical space in homogeneous catalysis [1,2] and realization of organosilicon-based triplet diradicals (molecular magnets).
