Abstract: Processing methods for solid materialsdepend crucially on the length scales and the chemistry of the endproduct. The synthesis of bulk materials has very different requirementsfrom thin films and the processing methods typically stand apart. Thesame is true for soft vs hard materials. In this presentation, I providea review on Sequential Infiltration Synthesis, a processing technique thatevolved from Atomic Layer Deposition in the last decade. I will discussits origins and potential uses in various settings: as a basic scientifictechnique, applications in nanoscale information processing hardware andpotential uses in pollution mitigation on a macro scale.
