Abstract:
Humans and animals alike depend on theavailability of clean drinking water as well as a healthy and clean aquaticenvironment as a source for food. Consequently, most human settlements arelocated close to water sources.
Unfortunately, this proximity has led toincreasing contamination of the aquatic environment with a variety of hazardouschemicals that can pose a threat to the health of the entire ecosystem.
In my research, I focus on the identificationof emerging environmental contamination issues. This can mean theidentification of new environmental contaminants as well as the analysis ofnewly identified problems such as environmental behaviour of mixtures, interactions of multiple stressors, or the mobility of chemicals in water.
Understanding these emerging environmentalissues is crucial for robust risk analysis, mitigation and regulation. As ananalytical environmental chemist, I develop chemical and data analysisstrategies to inform this process.
In this presentation, I would like to tell youabout some of the analytical challenges I encountered and the new insights wegained from interdisciplinary collaborations on the environmental fate andbehaviour of organic contaminants in the aquatic environment.
