Porphyrinsare a class of natural and synthetic aromatic macrocycles that have receivedextensive investigation because of their unique chemical and optoelectronicproperties. Their properties, which have led to diverse applications, havefascinated chemists from multiple fields.1 While porphyrins havemade in-roads in multiple fields they have received at best minimal attentionin the field of polysiloxane chemistry, in part due to their mutualincompatibilities.2,3Polysiloxanes are a class of inorganic polymers well known for their uniqueproperties including low glass transition temperature, high thermal andoxidative stabilities, high optical transparency and low refractive indices.4 If properly utilized, these properties could compliment those possessed by porphyrins. This talk willexplore the development of synthetic techniques including the Piers-Rubinsztajnreaction, and acid-base chemistry for the reliable and controllableincorporation of porphyrins into polysiloxane materials. Challenges associatedwith overcoming the natural incompatibility of the two materials will bedescribed. Finally, applications of the new materials including dielectricelastomers, singlet oxygen generating elastomers and catalytic elastomers willbe explored.5
