Abstract:
Inthe past two decades, there have been many advances in the development ofplasmonic nanomaterials and their application in chemical sensing, photothermaltherapy, enhancement of photovoltaic device performance, catalysis,solar-driven desalination, among others. To date, nano-sized metals such asgold, silver, and copper have been well-explored for plasmonic applications, however gold is expensive, and silver and copper succumb to oxidation whichdampens their plasmonic response. In a quest to develop plasmonic nanomaterialsthat are low cost and chemically stable, transition metal nitrides have emergedas strong contenders based on computational studies performed in the lastdecade. However, the experimental evidence of this remains scare. This presentationwill highlight some of our research group’s recent progress on the synthesis offree-standing plasmonic transition metal nitride nanoparticles. The chemicalstability and photothermal properties of metal nitrides will also be discussed.
