Cationicgroup 3 alkyl complexes are underreported in comparison to analogous group 4complexes. This scarcity of these complexes can be attributed to theirpropensity to engage in undesirable reactions such as ligand redistribution andcyclometallation. To increase the thermal stability of such complexes, design features such as carefully positioned steric bulk and ligand rigidityare beneficial. Additionally, such ligands must also have considerable donorability, in order to stabilize inherently electron deficient cationic metalcenters. This talk will detail the synthesis of a variety of neutral andmonoanionic ligands that incorporate the aforementioned design features, whichwere utilized in the successful synthesis of a variety of neutral, monocationicand extremely rare dicationic group 3 alkyl complexes. Lastly, the utility ofthese cationic complexes as catalysts for ethylene polymerization andintramolecular hydroamination will be discussed.
