In response to the feedback we received on our survey this Fall, CCB EDI is sponsoring an event next week to help connect students with undergraduate research opportunities called Meet the Groups.

On Wednesday, January 25 from 11:30-1:30, please plan to drop by ABB 273 (same room as the pizza party, if you came to that).  Representatives from various groups within the department will be available to chat with you about the labs that they work in – these will be UG students, grad students, postdocs, and staff (i.e. not the profs themselves).

When you leave the event, you’ll have the opportunity to fill out a form requesting one-on-one meetings with some of the profs (those who have opted to hold follow-up office hours).  CCB EDI will take care of scheduling those meetings and will let you know when your appointment is scheduled ASAP.  We can’t guarantee a research placement, but we hope to provide some support with the process of requesting one.

The idea is to give you a chance to “do your homework”.  If you are looking to set up a research opportunity in the near future, you’ll go to your meeting with a professor equipped with information about what the group is currently working on and ideas about how you could contribute.  You’ll be able to ask good questions and make a good impression.

Even if you don’t want a research placement immediately, you are still warmly encouraged to attend.  This event is also designed to help you figure out who’s doing what in the department and to think about where you might be interested in getting involved in a year or two.  You should absolutely still attend even if you don’t want to set up any appointments.
